Alo, Bonjour and Welcome to our Site!
Haiti has had an ongoing issue regarding food insecurity even before the destructive 2010 earthquake that took the lives of thousands. The issue continues to cause health issues and lead to a decrease in productivity in Haiti. The main issues behind this food insecurity are all deeply rooted in the poverty of the country and that most Haitians make less than $2 a day. Our goal is to identify the main issue that is causing this food insecurity and create an engineering solution to help stop hunger in Haiti.
Problem Identified
Flooding in Haiti has been a major issue when it comes to agriculture. The continuous cycle of deforestation has made the flooding worst and has left farmers with land unable to grow crops. Without farmers having the ability to grow crops it contributes to food insecurity because no food is being distributed to the urban areas. Any slight flooding will ruin the growing cycle of any plant because they will be suffocated and unable to grow. “Widespread deforestation, particularly of this mountainous country, has led to flooding, dramatic rates of soil erosion, and subsequent declines in agricultural productivity”(USAID, 2018).
